Texas Instruments Space Shuttle
From when The Future was still cool
The year was 1977. The future was looking bright. Star Wars was in the theaters. Star Trek was on TV. The space shuttle was about to fly. LED watches were on our wrists.
The Star Trek crew at the Shuttle Enterprise dedication, September 1976
The space shuttle never made access to space routine and the LED watch faded into oblivion, but we can still reminisce. This Texas Instruments Star Wars LED watch combines iconic 70s style with a nice design, excellent accuracy, durability, and light weight.
Unfortunately, as successful as it was, the Texas Instruments LED watch was the end of the line for LED watches. The low price war also had the dual impact of putting most LED watch companies out of business and also giving LED watches a reputation for being cheap and disposable instead of precision high tech instruments. The watch industry and the cachet of digital watches have never fully recovered.
