Texas Instruments Star Wars (Grey)

The coolest watch on the playground in 1977

The year was 1977. Star Wars was all the rage. The future was looking bright. For the first time, Texas instruments managed to bring the price of LED watches below $20 which made it possible to market LED watches to kids. If you were a kid in 1977, the next best thing to having your very own light saber was owning a futuristic glowing LED watch.

The Texas Instruments Star Wars LED watch combines iconic 70s style Star Wars graphics with a nice design, excellent accuracy, durability, and light weight. The watch was originally sold in a box with the iconic star wars graphics on the side and also included a collection of stickers that kids could use to apply to the front bezel of the watch to customize the appearance.

Unfortunately, as successful as it was, the Texas Instruments LED watch was the end of the line for LED watches. The low price war also had the dual impact of putting most LED watch companies out of business and also giving LED watches a reputation for being cheap and disposable instead of precision high tech instruments. The watch industry and the cachet of digital watches have never fully recovered.
